Members of the Lodge of Good Intention were delighted to host visits by two groups of the 1st North Devon Cub Group, together with their Cub Leaders and parents on a visit to the Freemason’s Lodge in Trafalgar Lawn, Barnstaple on Monday 22nd and Thursday 25th November 2021.
Alan Cockman and Rob Palmer welcomed the groups and gave them a brief description of how Freemasonry started and how it has developed over the years. The Cubs were surprised to hear that the chair now used by the Worshipful Master was, in the late 1790’s, used by the then Prince of Wales who eventually became King George 4th and one of the young ladies was even able to celebrate her birthday by having “Happy Birthday to You” sung to her whilst she sat in the Master’s chair!
The cubs were then invited to examine the regalia, artefacts, tools and banners which are part of the ceremonies and then to sit in various the chairs in the Lodge.
They were also surprised to find that much of the furniture came from about the 1790s and that the building dates back to the Battle of Trafalgar.
Alan & Rob were impressed by the questions the cubs asked and by the interest that they showed in the whole evening.
