MACE 2021 – Herts Bowling Club, Watford. 13th August
In aid of Marie Curie Care & MacMillan Nurses
Devon’s Bowlers ventured out of County to Watford to compete for the MACE Trophy (Masonic Annual Charity Event).
From Keith Young,( Secretary Devon Masonic Bowling Association):
The day ( Thursday) was further extended by the fact of illness, after arriving of one of the players needed to return to Devon, with a return to Watford overnight to enable the team to compete on the Friday. Having played 4 x 7 end games honours being equal ( 2x wins ,2 x losses the team returned to Devon. The team member who suffered illness has made a full recovery.
From Ian.A.Keech (Originating Governor ):
On a dry warmish and occasionally sunny Friday 20 rinks of bowlers plus some 25 supporters and helpers enjoyed the much [Covid] delayed 10th actual MACE day, returning to the venue where MACE began on August 12th 2011, when we sponsored Cyberknife at Mount Vernon Hospital. In 2012 Gloucestershire supported Robocap at Cheltenham;2013 Cambridgeshire went for Papworth Hospital; 2014 was Somerset and The Musgrave Vein Scanner, whilst in 2015 Northamptonshire nominated The Cynthia Spencer Hospice. Suffolk chose Hope for Tomorrow in 2016. Dorset in 2017 went for their Air Ambulance plus Julia House, followed by Leicestershire and Rutland in 2019 with Rainbow and Dove Cottage [also featured on Red nose Day that year]. Sussex selected Snowdrop/Rise/Prostate in 2019. In spite of Covid in 2020 London [LMBA] managed a donation to The British Red Cross without a wood being bowled!
This year Bedfordshire’s team 2 ran out winners against runners up Derbyshire -- who will be Host Province next year on Friday 12th August 2022 at the Selby Bowls Club. Bedfordshire’s team 1 completed a sort of double by taking 3rd place from Warwickshire.
MACE was especially privileged to have the MARK PGMs [W Bros Tom Quinn -- London and Richard Walker -- Hertfordshire] in attendance to present the trophies to the winning rinks. These very Worthy Brethren then presented our 2 chosen charities with cheques for £1150 each, funds raised by the MACE 2021 Bonus Ball scheme. It is anticipated that further similar value donations can be made once the final accounts have been ratified.
Given that MACE 2021 will have raised £5000 this brings the cumulative total donated
to its nominated charities to over £60,000. Well done all you Masonic Bowlers!
New members would be welcomed into Devon’s Team (info through 07876292843).
