devon masonic fishing charity 2019-09Friday 13th September saw the Masonic Fishing Charity, Devon Branch, head off to Stafford Moor Fishery near Winkleigh to entertain our guests from Acorn School for the day. It’s a new venue for us and is known as a superb fishery with 6 lakes, containing many different species of coarse fish, including some very big carp. The owners of the fishery were very welcoming and gave us exclusive use of Oak lake for the day.

We chatted to the anglers waiting to buy their tickets and bait, who asked who we were, and they were very surprised to find out that we were masons, and we were there to take children for a day’s fishing. The general statement was

“I had no idea that masons did that sort of thing.”

So, a bit of education on the charitable side of freemasonry was well received.

We have now purchased our own fishing poles, and this was their first outing. Unfortunately, some of the fish proved to be stronger than the lines and elastics so there were lots of changing to stronger lines throughout the day. Phil Jones has very kindly taken them all away and will put in new, stronger elastics for next year.

The children had a brilliant day, all of them caught fish, one landing 23, the others averaged 18 – 20. That is a good day’s fishing. Mike Latham’s guest hooked in to a big carp, so Mike had to take over and after a 20-minute battle managed to land a 6lb carp – amazing on such light gear.

Phil and Julie Niles, assisted by George and Maureen, cooked a good lunch for everyone and maintained the flow of coffee throughout the event, so thanks to them.

All the children received a medal and certificate and left at 1400, having had a great day out, and they would all love to come back.

That was our final event for the year, and we hope to be as successful next year. I must thank Dave Lang for dealing with the school, Nigel Bird for the organisation of the day, Mike Latham for the finances, Phil and Julie for their tireless efforts, along with George and Maureen and finally Mike, Phil, Keith and Stuart for their fishing skills.
